Forged railway wheels and axles are completely machined and automatically transported back and forth between the relevant machines in a new area gantry in Russia. One challenge during transportation and machining of raw parts is to compensate for the deviation in size which can be between 5mm and 250mm. Due to the high number of parts and high quality standards it is also necessary to be able to track these at any time.
The wide range of deviation in size amongst raw parts can be detected using a camera system. Their data can be passed on for further processing. The individual parts are tracked by a host computer (installed on the basis of SCADA System WinCC) which controls the part tracking, job management and displays the system availability. Automated through a Sinumerik 840D controller, the parts are moved through the area gantry by an NC gripper within a gantry interconnection.
